Courtney Harvey is the young lady who big chopped ON STAGE at the Return of the Curls Expo here in Richmond, Va. How exciting is that?
Why did you bigchop?
The easy answer is: I wanted natural hair.. to be able to achieve natural hairstyles.. and to be a more in touch with myself at my most natural state. I wanted to see if I had curls, or kinks, or something in between since I hadn't seen my hair in it's natural state since I was much younger (I believe 8 years old.) Ultimately I wanted to achieve what I like to call "Corinne Bailey Rae hair," or her token big, beautiful and wavy hair-do she's been rocking for the last few years.
When did you big chop?
July 28th of this year.
What was your reaction?
I felt liberated.. like I'd finally gotten to what I had been looking forward to for months. I was shocked at first to see my new length and texture, but shortly after I'd fallen in love with the curls I didn't know I had.
What are you doing to take care of your hair?
Water has become my new best friend. I wet it daily, co-wash it every other day, and wash with sulfate-free shampoo twice a week. I've been bouncing around with different products, whether they be leave-in conditioners, styling gels, or curling creams - but I've yet to find a set regimen that I'm 100% in love with.
Do your regret your decision?
Not at all. It's so much fun to do my hair now. It's less of a worry and more of an interesting experiment. I think that's many due to the length, yet I'm excited to see it grow. I cut my hair only a week and a half ago and I'm still super excited every moment I have time to play in it!
Just suck it up and do it! It's the hair God put on your head for a reason! It may not be the same texture all the way throughout but that's the fun of it. . . so just take the plunge and start your natural journey! There's so much more to do with it once you chop off the chemically-treated hair!
